business porn (cont.)

I was having a long conversation with a friend last night about "Business Porn":

Business Porn is just like Ordinary Porn or Real Estate Porn, except instead of it being about the women we wished we could sleep with, or the houses we wish we owned, it's about all those cool, lucrative, exciting jobs and businesses that we wish we had, instead of the normal, tedious, schleppy crap most of us end up doing to pay the bills.
Does your blog suffer from low traffic? It's probably because there's not enough porn on it. Sex Porn, Real Estate Porn, Wine Porn, Biz Porn, Emotional Porn, it doesn't matter.
Porn = Traffic.
Porn = Marketing.
Porn = Sales.
With Porn, all things are possible.

So now you know.

It's true.

I've been blogging now for almost two years, now. I didn't start making actual sales of art online until the blog brought in more traffic.

Then I launched a new product and blog about 45 days ago that has a decidedly kinkier twist... traffic and sales are through the roof compared to the more cultural offerings. After getting picked up on Fleshbot, I'm actually in the black already.

I know you were being metaphorical, Hugh, but the interesting side note is that people visiting the kinky blog click through quite a bit to the art blogs. Hmmm... maybe people really *do* buy Playboy for the articles?

How about Soul Porn?

Yes, genius. My wife would recommend the following; bike porn and fish porn. I'm a bicycle junkie and run a bike company and I love to fish. I have tons of porn for both categories. Periodically my wife forces me to throw away the stacks of magazines and catalogs that pile up all over the house.

Is porn then the innate and individualised addicition that makes you come back for more and sample whatever else is on the periphery even if you dont really need it? Does porn overshadow the quality of the product by manipulating a primordial and intangible urge peculiar to specific demographics?

Steve, I would say the primordial overshadows pretty much everything, including demographics.

As I said before... Mega! No wonder brasil business opportunities blog’s hits are increasing like wide fire. If you can put 2 and 2 together, the better, plus there’s nothing wrong in having some fun now and again. To enjoy the business, man, what a niche!

Hugh, While I do appreciate your business angle... and its all pervasive thrust! is life in general not a bit more dimensional than capitalism and product sales? Is your amusing little idea getting lost in its own web real self importance perhaps? Keep totting up the cards but do get out more! BW

I don't know how I wondered into your blog but I started reading it at work today (lunchtime really) and haven't been able to stop. There's so much here, you're so funny and what you say is so true. Self confidence is a hard thing to get and so much of what you say is a way to find that. I think I'll stick around and read the rest of it. Oh and I like your cartoons too.

RJMACF, I find capitalism utterly fascinating... not to mention, I find it a lot of fun to write about.

Funnily enough, I found your comment rather self-important, as well. I guess two can play at that game ;-)

Dude -- It irritates me to no end that you are right on this. I rail against it but its a hopeless battle. My particular irritation is small business porn--the promises of instant cures to all of what ails your website/marketing/etc. for just $199. Blech. Anyway--thanks for the insight.

"International Living" and "Agora Press" in general has the WORSE "Expatriate Porn" of anyone!

Combine "Real Estate Porn" and "Travel Porn" and you get "Expatriate Porn"

Promises, promises...but no hard data or real info.
