While many of us are coming to terms with our long-suppressed issues around racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism and a long list of other problems lurking on or just below the surface of our society, some institutions are more invested in linguistic quick-fixes.
They’re rooting out potentially offensive terms and phrases, many with vaguely violent or sexual connotations (think “killing it” or “that sucks”) and seeking to cancel them at “breakneck speed,” a term which no doubt will find itself on the chopping block soon enough (along with “chopping block,” probably).
