Last night I had a great talk with my old friend, the great Doc Searls, one of the co-authors of the greatest book about the Internet ever written, The Cluetrain Manifesto.
The phone call lasted well over an hour. It was great to talk to him again…
Like a lot of old web veterans, we were both lamenting the passing of the good ol’ days.
You know, back when the Internet was fun. And Interesting. And new.
Back before people were using the phrase, “Social Media”.
Back before social graphs, social networks and social whatever.
Back before everything had a “2.0” automatically coming after it.
Back before the armies of “Social Media Specialists” and their endless torrents of buzzwords and vapid platitudes.
Now I don’t mind people making a buck on the Internet, small businesses or large. Hell, that’s all I’ve ever tried to do…
But to my mind, the Internet works best when it’s anarchic, disruptive and irreverent.
Three qualities there seems to be less of these days, at least, with my peer group.
