“A Business Model Takes Two Years.”
My mother, who in her day was a very successful technology consultant, always used to say that: It takes a business at least two years to figure out what its model actually is. Two years of scrambling around, trying to find something that will actually stick long-term.
Now that the Purple Cow print party is over, I have to get back home to Texas and get to work on the next phase of gapingvoid i.e. getting the Cube Grenade idea up n’ running.
I’m guessing I’ve got at least two years of working my ass off to make that happen, and then some. Looks like Mom was right, YET AGAIN. Heh.
“Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more…”

Mother is always right. I learned that lesson early, and it has never failed me. The next two years should be an engaging and memorable battle. Remember that you are worth your breeding.

I was a new reader to your blog Hugh but after the Henry V quote I’m here to stay. Reading that scene again I feel inspired to work harder Monday morning.
I have fond memories of a dinner party at which a friend’s 85 year old grandfather stood on his chair impromptu and began to recite that speech in it’s entirety, all as part of a story he was telling about WWII. I remember every detail and always will.
Good to know it doesn’t happen by magic for anyone. Yet, two years feels like a Marathon since I’m madly in love with my plan…
If an experienced guy like you takes 2 years to figure out his ‘Cube Grenade’ thread, I wonder how much longer it will take me to put together my ‘5 legged stool’ work toolkit.
The theory being that various pieces of work add to the whole and that if one leg breaks you don’t fall on your face.

Your words (once again) help soothe. Now I know, one year down, one more to go in my “Evil Plan”. Which is not so evil…. just trying to devise the perfect plan/model to help overworked artists make a living wholesaling their work.
I never realized there was a difference between a business plan and a business model until I went back to school this year…. which I know for sure I would not have done had I not listen to your audiobook at just the right time in my life.
Living in the sticks of Far West Texas, helps (makes?) us be more creative in the ways we do business. Right homeboy?
