This reminds me so strongly of that 1960's series "The Prisoner" starring Patrick McGoohan.

Your cartoon caption is, I'm sure, what everyone thought as they ran down the beach being chased by that huge, horrible, roaring bouncing ball --- which then enveloped them and returned them to The Village.
