So what happens to marketing now that we have all this jolly post-Cluetrain action happening? Read this great post from Tara Hunt.
I particularly like Point Number Six:
6. A good marketer gets involved in the community.I've tried taking a similar aproach with Stormhoek and how it interfaces with the blogging/Web 2.0 crowd.I'm not just talking throwing a few dollars of sponsorship in their general direction in exchange for a banner. I'm talking about getting your hands dirty. Getting involved. Taking up the cause for yourself. Starting initiatives. Supporting initiatives. Getting to know everyone.
Who says Web 2.0 is just about internet technology? Who says wine is just about fermented grape juice? Where are the edges? The fun thing about the Stormhoek project is that I get to find out.
[UPDATE:] Taras's follow-up post on Point Number Six: "How how does a marketer get involved in the community without it being a bullshit PR move?"
[Here's a pic of me and Tara in London last month.]
Posted by hugh macleod at January 20, 2006 10:31 AM | TrackBackIt my be that I missed the posts but it occurred to me today that I've not seen any update on the Stormhoek label competition and of particular interest to me, the film-script (did the updated script get posted as promised?)
Posted by: john at January 20, 2006 1:47 PMJohn, the label's being redesigned as we speak. as soon as it's public we'll move that thread forward again.
David's been in America this last month, so I'm waiting to hear back from him re. the film script.
Posted by: hugh macleod at January 20, 2006 1:50 PMHugh, you look like a very likeable fellow I must say, and your friend also - you both appear very approachable. Nice pic. And another good post. Keep it up.
Posted by: Patrick Dodds at January 20, 2006 9:20 PMThanks for the updates. Coincidentally, while mooching around the Sainsbury wine department this afternoon, I encountered Stormhoek and i have to agree the labelling is awful. Funnily enough, having sampled it at a number of geek dinners I can't recall having perused the bottle. Make of that what you will!
But even with a great new label there is a major problem - 6.99 a bottle is a big obstacle in a supermarket filled with half price offers of wine that are in my opinion of at least equal quality. Now 6.99 is, I accept, not a super premium price but it is high in UK terms and I wonder if I was the only one who hadn't expected Stormhoek to be pegged at such a price-point?
