second thoughts....

OK, having second thoughts.... ermmmmmm...

What "blogging" t-shirt should I debut with?

This one ("Was it good for you?") or this one? ("I'm blogging this")?

Can we please have a concensus?

The other 3 choices I'm fine with.

Thanks.

I'd buy "I'm blogging this", or at least, I'd like to buy it :) I like your choices on the rest too!

sheep vs wolf was always my favourite

Def "Was it good for you"!

Posted by: Tim the Wreck at March 10, 2005 9:11 PM

I have to even out the score with the "I'm bloggin this" one. Then again, take into consideration that that shirt uses the best word ever. This could be a bad thing though because not everyone would by a shirt with fuck on it.

Posted by: Recipher at March 10, 2005 9:31 PM

CFA should be the first one if you are going after revenue first, making a statement second.

I'm blogging this if you're making a statement first, money second.

Both will make money but blogging this makes a solid social statement (funny) and the other is just damn funny.

Posted by: Rick Segal at March 10, 2005 9:32 PM

"I'm Blogging this" is my vote. I'd buy it right now. This very second.

Posted by: sbamara at March 10, 2005 9:33 PM

One more vote for "Was it good for you?" :)

Posted by: Jack Cheng at March 10, 2005 9:43 PM

well... "I'm blogging this" ... already a similar t-shirt at ThinkGeek.. so my vote would be for "Was it good for you?"

Was it good for you gets my vote. Just because I wouldn't be able to wear the one with "oh fuck you" on it to work. ;-)

Let's see, the three sure winners are "complete fucking asshole," "shit," and the optimistic new agey one. If we regard your first four shirts as a product line, I'd say it's best rounded out by the design that's cynical but has no naughty words. that would be "was it good for you?"
If you're giving out a free shirt for the best reasoning re #4 in the lineup, I'll take a large "shit" please.

Posted by: Andrew at March 10, 2005 10:30 PM

Gotta vote for "was it good for you." I can't wear anything with fuck in it to Casual Friday.

Was it good for you?

You need something about sex and/or love in there. Plus, it's a classic question.

I'm blogging this. Without a doubt.

Posted by: Sophie at March 11, 2005 12:28 AM

I love your work, but the chance I'll wear a shirt with a swear word on it is zero. Oh well, maybe I'll wait till the next round....keep 'em coming.

Posted by: richk at March 11, 2005 12:44 AM

"I'm blogging this." People tell me that I should be blogging such-and-such a thing anyway, so it'd actually get worn by me.

Posted by: Jennifer at March 11, 2005 12:48 AM

'I'm blogging this', for free advertising, sorry - conversation, please send me a free one.

It would take the place in my heart that my '404 /shirt/tie not found' T-shirt currently fills.

I'd go for "Was it good for you?"

Posted by: ethan at March 11, 2005 2:28 AM

Why limit it to 200 when you could possibly sell much more? Just take preorders..."please allow six to eight weeks for delivery."

Posted by: Barbara at March 11, 2005 2:55 AM

Oh, and I wouldn't wear the swear words either, nor allow my husband, kids or employees to.

Posted by: Barbara at March 11, 2005 2:56 AM

I'd have to go with "Was it good for you?"

Have you read "The Wee Book of Calvin" by Bill Duncan Hugh?

Well worth a read if you need a bit of an uplift. Or as they say in Crieff, Scotland: "a droopit moo."

Enjoy the blog!

"I'm Blogging this" gets my vote....But, what I would really like to see is the "...Moment that wasn't Random or Asinine" as a t-shirt! But that's just my bitter and crabby two cents

"Was it good for you?"

Now if this was LJ you could do a propper poll...

Posted by: Carl at March 11, 2005 5:11 AM

"Was it good for you?" is good by me, but just because it rings so true.

As far as profanity on tee shirts goes... well, fuck 'em if they can't take a joke, right? What good is casual friday if you can't get good and casual? maybe they should have naked friday! well... maybe not. Sorry, but the day someone can say to me "your boss dresses you funny" is deep and far in the past.

Posted by: john t unger at March 11, 2005 8:03 AM

My vote goes to "Was it good for you?".
Although, when you get to the second set of t-shirts my vote would go for a design that featured more of Hughs crazy baroque abstract doodles on it...

Posted by: Aiden Kenny at March 11, 2005 8:59 AM

I go for "Was it good for you"

Might even buy one.

Posted by: roy at March 11, 2005 11:41 AM

Why so limited? Do both, especially since opinions are divided. When are you sending some over to Asia?

Less cursing = more sales (at least for me!) Not too sure about wearing a shirt with the word fuck on it.

Posted by: Jim at March 12, 2005 3:37 AM

If I may suggest... I think a better idea would be for you to open a "store" with Cafepress. http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/

Most of the major syndicates use them, as do many online cartoonists. You don't need to invest in inventory, the quality of the merchandise is good, and you can offer an unlimited number of different images.

PLUS, since many people are concerned about the swearing on a t-shirt, they could opt for getting the gag on a mug or mouse pad or any one of dozens of different products...calendars, books, clocks, even thongs! It's all made-to-order.

The downside is that the products are a bit pricey to begin with (you set the price above what they charge), but they're good quality and they have excellent customer service. They once screwed up a part of my order, redid the items involved, overnighted it out to me and let me keep two t-shirts without charge.

No hassle with printers, no outlay of money, no shipping... Not a bad deal and given the type of work you do and the quantity of merchandise-worthy gags you have, I'd highly recommend it.

Posted by: Dawn Douglass at March 12, 2005 5:33 AM

I've heard nothing but bad things about cafe press.

I hear the quaility sucks. No good if you can't control the quality.

Also, these shirts will have their own "gapingvoid" labels. Very cool...

Posted by: hugh macleod at March 12, 2005 9:08 AM

They got a bad reputation starting out because of their t-shirts, but they have since changed the process. Sure, it's still not quite as good as silk screening, but they wear fine now. It's the other things beyond t-shirts that most interest me anyway. You don't have to sell the t-shirts. You could do your own and create other merchandise to sell from there. You could also test the popularity of certain images and then have the most popular ones made up in t-shirts.

Cafe Press has a 100% guarantee, so anybody who isn't happy can get their money back. So I don't see quality as a problem. As I've said, I've ordered many things from them and have been happy.

My own experience (I've been amongst cartoonists for many years now), is that the people who complain loud about Cafe Press are typically people who created a store there and couldn't sell anything. You must have a very large and strong fan base to make it work.

Look, it's not like I own stock in CP or anything. The gags you've chosen just aren't my cup of tea, and I wouldn't want the t-shirts. I'd love a mug with the pickaxe, though.

Just an idea.

Posted by: Dawn Douglass at March 12, 2005 10:03 AM

I'd buy either one (and will probably buy both eventually), but for the debut, I'll vote for "Was it good for you."

My 2¢ on the cafepress thing. They're convenient, but as you've said, Hugh, there's no quality control for you, plus the profit margin is incredibly low, unless you charge an exorbitant price for a transfer t-shirt. You've definitely made the right decision.

Also.. can I make a request?

Can you do a cartoon that says "Fuck cursing," or maybe, "Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck," or maybe, "Fuck you, you self righteous bastard!" :)

Posted by: andy at March 12, 2005 2:31 PM

"Was it good for you?" is my choice.

Posted by: Tom Guarriello at March 12, 2005 3:15 PM

why are you publihing the first shirts with the geekiest ones possible?!?! you ahve a lot of cool cartoons - but the ones about blogging etc are pretty damn geeky, especailyl to wear. you will get typecast like those shirts that say "cd /dev/beer" or whatever. is that what you want?

Posted by: adam at March 12, 2005 6:45 PM

this one? oh fuck off

Posted by: Cory at March 12, 2005 8:21 PM

whatever the decision is, You make em nice and fluffy, (you know best, not cheapest) and I'd like to sell them on the back of my wine bottles.

Posted by: Jason at March 12, 2005 11:49 PM

It has to be 'read my blog' - I wanna wear that...classic.

Speaking of tees - have you seen what these guys are up to?

Yeah, I'm going to do "Was it good for you?"...

It's really simple- the more people buy t-shirts, the faster new designs are released.

Talk about incentive [KER-CHIIIING!!!!].

Good for you

Posted by: shootME at March 15, 2005 3:15 PM

Have you tried or looked at http://www.zazzle.com/

A collegue of mine uses them and loves the quality.

I too love the idea of picking any of artworks for a t-shirt (or mug), ordering them (even for a bit more money), and having you get paid. Think many of us would buy quite a few.

Posted by: johnza at March 16, 2005 6:27 PM
