The ROI Of Fireworks


There’s a reason nobody likes fireworks:
They’re expensive.
The show only lasts about fifteen minutes.
They literally go up in smoke.
They wake the baby.
They terrify the dog.
We spend more time setting them up than we do enjoying them.
And every year, thousands of people accidentally light their own shoes on fire.
That’s why nobody ever uses them.
Oh wait.
Actually, Americans spend billions of dollars on fireworks every Fourth of July.
It turns out we’re not actually buying fireworks, the product. We’re buying a moment.
It turns out no one ever leaves a fireworks show saying, “That was an excellent return on investment.”
They leave saying, “Did you see that last one?!”
Apparently, the value isn’t in the explosion, per se. It’s in the twenty people standing shoulder to shoulder, necks craned toward the sky, collectively saying, “Whoa…”
Who knew?
Business leaders are constantly forgetting this.
They assume people stay because of compensation packages, productivity tools, or another collaboration platform. Y’know, all the stuff the spreadsheets say is a very big deal.
But wouldn’t you know, they aren’t what people remember.
Nobody reminisces about the software rollout.
They remember the time their team went to the bar after surviving a brutal project.
Or when the meeting ran late so a colleague could show pictures of their nephew’s birthday party.
Or the inside joke that somehow survived three reorganizations.
Those moments don’t make sense on paper. Neither do fireworks.
Of course, anthropologists have known this forever.
They tell us every healthy culture invents rituals. Not because they have strong ROI, but because they transform a collection of individuals into a community.
The irony is that most organizations will happily spend millions on software designed to improve collaboration while questioning whether buying lunch for the team is “worth it.”
So for the leaders reading this today, instead of scarfing down hot dogs and potato salad, remember that culture isn’t built by maximizing utility.
It’s built by giving people stories they’ll tell long after the budget meeting is over.
Fireworks disappear in seconds. That’s exactly why they’re unforgettable. Happy Fourth.
