When there’s that balance between functionality and emotion, the two amplify each other and the result is really powerful.

It’s not just about interface design — it’s about life itself. Mike Matas, UI expert, was an integral part of the Yosemite design team at Apple, and is world-renowned for his understanding of the human experience — and how he captures that through his design work.

When asked about the most important element of design, Matas was quick to say emotion. Anything that makes you feel something – because the feeling makes it real.

That’s why we create visual objects. We know that design is how you get a person to feel something — that visual cues are triggers, that people can see and touch and then feel from that interaction.

Everything we do is for the emotions – the endorphins of exercise, the oxytocin from a hug, the rush from a heady perfume.
