How do you steer a ship in a storm?
You certainly can’t ignore it.
You have to do your best to understand: to predict in what direction the storm is moving, and then to react accordingly.
As a leader, it’s your job to work with your team. After all, you’re not leading yourself; you’re working with others to bring out their best selves.
If a team member is struggling, whether emotionally or physically or with a project or however human suffering may play out, you can’t pretend they’re not. I mean, you can, but it’s not to your own benefit.
We need to recognize employees as people, whole people, who need support and guidance and compassion.
We need leaders who are mindful of their teammates — who treat their teammates as their own.
We need empathic leaders.
