The movement cannot sustain itself.
Change in culture isn’t a thing that happens once; it’s a change of mindset, something meant to impact surroundings and generations to come.
But until it becomes standard, the change has to be maintained.
In writing about radical change, McKinsey assigns four steps to sustainable change:
- At the start, to ensure alignment — so the change can happen at all;
- at the acceptance of planning/strategy, so realistic timelines and milestones can be set;
- throughout implementation, to make sure the mission is being adhered to,
- and during the final handover of the project, to assess success and effectiveness.
Without a reason, a cause, or a feeling, a movement will never be able to get through all of those steps. It’s only when someone really, really feels something that they can take the movement through its full course.
