We’ve heard this line attributed to both Chomsky and Werner Erhard. Either way, there is so much discussion about the importance of leaders [read: CEO] involvement in setting the culture of organizations; fundamentally it is very much language based.
In the absence of a well-defined language, behaviors and outcomes are unclear. And, after all, there is no reason for organizational culture to exist if it doesn’t drive better operational outcomes.
There is nothing new here. Our friend, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh proved that idea to the world two decades ago.
In other words, successful CEOS tend to “get” the culture idea that language is the foundation of culture.
So often we focus on the outcomes, like employee engagement, and the ‘how’ of Culture Design™ is overlooked.
