HUGH’S SECOND LAW: “The minute the Facebooks of the world forget they are replaceable, is the minute people like me move in for The Kill.”
[HUGH”S FIRST LAW: “All online social networks eventually turn into a swampy mush of spam.”]
[UPDATE: I left the following message in the comments: “Ben Grada, I’m not anti-Facebook. In fact, I quite like it… But the ever increasing amount of non-relevant stuff it’s letting through the net is beginning to concern me. I actually met Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year in Silicon Valley. Good guy. Wicked smart and gracious manners. I hope he works it out.”]
“Facebooks of the word” s/word/world/ ?
Ironically, I was just having a strategy session today with a company that was not monetizing their transactional emails. ie… you make a friend request, why doesn’t the friend request email have an advertisement in it?
I guess I never looked at it from your perspective. 😉
Fucking Genius cartoon
I like the “swampy mush of spam” idea, maybe that could be worked into an image too… “…traversing the lower reaches of another online social network, our hero finds himself sinking to the waist in a swampy mush of spam”
While I haven’t quite had the same problems with Facebook that you have, I was inspired nonetheless:
I have two groups of friends yelling at me right now:
Friend 1: “Oh my God, Facebook is so awesome, I can’t believe I waited to join!”
Friend 2: “Oh my God, Facebook is so awful, I can’t believe I joined!”
You guys could be right and Facebook might now be awful . . . or maybe you have awful friends. Did you think of that?
@Jose Castillo I know what you mean. I only joined Facebook because of Friend Group 1… but I am very much in Friend Groupo 2.
I just don’t see the appeal. I only like the “So and so is…” feature and Twitter does that so much more nicely for me.
So if I don’t want to be a Zombie or a Werewolf, be poked or have food thrown at me what’s it for?
I haver a blog, I Twitter, I have photos on Flickr…
Don’t get me started on the look and feel and UScentricity of the mobile features…
greed is still the “scalability weapon” of choice…
“This just in: Hugh Macleod beats up Facebook, says he ‘was moving in for the kill.’ More on this as it develops.”
Hugh, This is what i felt when i joined Facebook, you’ll enable ” people who don’t matter ” to spam you for free!. Let’s move in for the kill. I’m your soldier.
Ben Grada, I’m not anti-Facebook. In fact, I quite like it… But the ever increasing amount of non-relevant stuff it’s letting through the net is beginning to concern me.
I actually met Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year in Silicon Valley. Good guy. Wicked smart and gracious manners. I hope he works it out.
I hope he hits the heads of 90% of app developers with a big hammer. 🙂
“minute people like me move in for The Kill”
same here. i mean move to kill account (after i’ve read http://www.25hoursaday.com/weblog/2007/11/27/SomeThoughtsOnTheFacebookBeacon.aspx). at the end account is still alive. thinking can i get back to them by writing some small app. that would be proper kill.
