You read things like The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and such and you realize that hippies (like beatniks before them) scared the living fuck out of people until they expanded from a group of vocal and highly political artists and writers to a bunch of angsty stoner kids not wanting to go to Vietnam.
Anything that [A] makes big promises and [B] has very low barriers to entry, often has a tendency to unravel rather spectacularly.

This brings to mind the difference between Lucasfilm and the failure of Francis Coppola's Zoetrope Studios. George Lucas doesn't even make movies anymore - and rarely did - but has built a successful company, albeit one that seems to primarily make video games and license toys.

Coppola's ambitions spread beyond movies to TV, theater, radio, publishing and he never made it to the '80s for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Coppola's dream still impresses me far more than Lucas' success.
