thingamy and hamish

Hamish, my old highschool friend and now one of the top SAP guru's on the planet, says some nice things about Sigurd Rinde's business software, a.k.a. Thingamy:

I had a look at Thingamy, and I was impressed by it. I'll write more about it when I have time, but it's one of those "Scissor, Paper, Stone" type of things. Simple, but with a lot of implications. A thoughtful tool, and I suspect it could be used to make some very elegant solutions. It might even encourage a bit of out of the box thinking.
Last weekend Sig and I were in Geneva, where Hamish lives. We all had a nice lunch at this fabulous restaurant, and afterwards Sig invited Hamish to take Thingamy for a test drive etc etc.

Sig explains the basic idea beind Thingamy here, and perhaps why he was so keen to show it to an SAP consultant.

Hint: SAP has millions of lines of code. Thingamy has a couple of thousand. Do the math.

[Disclosure: Sig and I are working together.]

Based on the sermons of St Hugh, I learned about wikis. Now we have a whizz bang research forum for posting results immediately and getting feedback from colleagues without having to wait for our bi monthly turn to speak at the lab meeting. It generates relevance, excitement and momentum. That's right wikis are speeding the progress of research.

I haven't got the bloody foggiest what this thingammy is, but your pedigree and integrity insist that I jump on this and pump it as soon as it rolls out.

SAP might have 'millions of lines of code', but there doesn't appear to be a single line on its website explaining what it is or does. Is this the future of marketing?

Thingamy's a little more enlightening, but not by much. I'm still no wiser, nor any better informed. Can you spare a supplementary blog post to explain what they are both about?
Thanks
Andrew

Andrew put it way more eloquently than me (i.e. "haven't the bloody foggiest").So if there was an opportunity to explain what Thingie is, that would be great. I had a hard time getting my doctor and scientist colleagues to get over the name "wiki" even when I told them what it was all about (we now refer to it as our SocialText page). I can only imagine what they'll say when I pimp Thingammy.

Andrew, SAP is so huge and such an overwhelming force (for evil?) in Business that they don't really have to say what they do; it's like Oracle saying "we make databases."

I agree that if you're not exposed to the SAP juggernaut it's hard to see what it is and why it makes so much money, so:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAP_AG

Nutshell: giant boring run-your-business software for giant boring companies.

(And a damned lucrative thing to be an expert on.)
